Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Black and white photography strips away colour distraction, forcing you to work with the fundamental building blocks of all great images: light direction, tonal range, texture, and shape. This beginner course guides you through the entire monochrome workflow — from calibrating your camera for RAW capture to applying the Zone System for exposure, through to advanced tonal curves and dodge-and-burn techniques in post. You will study the methods of Ansel Adams, Sebastiao Salgado, and Fan Ho, applying their principles to your own subjects immediately.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Apply the Zone System to expose RAW files for maximum tonal latitude in any lighting condition

02

Use in-camera colour filters (red, orange, yellow, green) and their digital equivalents to shape tonal separation between subjects

03

Evaluate a scene for graphic potential — leading lines, texture contrast, and luminosity differences — before pressing the shutter

04

Build a repeatable Lightroom develop workflow: linear profile, HSL channel mixing, tone curve shaping, and targeted masking

05

Perform non-destructive dodge and burn using luminosity masks in Adobe Camera RAW or Lightroom AI Masking

06

Export and present monochrome images with appropriate bit depth, output sharpening, and soft-proofing for print or web
