Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Fishing Fundamentals teaches you how to choose the right rod, reel, and line for the species you are targeting, how to execute both spinning and baitcasting casts with accuracy, and how to read water to predict where fish are holding. You will tie the five most important terminal tackle knots, compare bait and lure strategies, and practice proper catch-and-release handling that maximises fish survival. The course closes with licensing requirements, Leave No Trace ethics, and a gear checklist that keeps costs sensible for beginners.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Select an appropriate rod, reel, and line system for a target species and water type

02

Execute a spinning cast and a baitcasting cast with consistent accuracy at 10–15 m

03

Tie the Palomar, improved clinch, loop-to-loop, Uni-to-Uni, and snell knots correctly under field conditions

04

Read current seams, depth transitions, and structure to identify high-probability holding zones

Compare live bait, cut bait, and artificial lure presentations and choose the right option for conditions

06

Handle and release a fish safely while minimising physiological stress and mortality risk
