Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

This course covers the complete beginner workflow: matching fly rod, reel, and line to your target water; mastering the false cast and roll cast; identifying insect hatches and choosing matching patterns; and presenting dry flies and nymphs to feeding fish. You will also learn wading safety, river reading, and catch-and-release handling backed by fisheries research. Every lesson is built around real-world scenarios on moving water, not a parking-lot lawn.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Match fly rod weight, line taper, and leader length to the water type and target species

02

Execute a consistent overhead false cast and a roll cast in tight quarters

03

Read river features — seams, riffles, pools, and eddies — to locate holding fish

04

Identify the four key insect orders and select an appropriately sized and coloured pattern

05

Present a dry fly or nymph with a drag-free drift using mend and reach-cast techniques

06

Handle and release trout following science-based protocols to maximise post-release survival
