Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Pottery & Ceramics Basics takes you from choosing the right clay body to loading a kiln for your first glaze firing. You will build a working vocabulary for studio ceramics, practise the three core hand-building methods alongside an introduction to the potter's wheel, and understand the chemistry and physics that transform wet clay into durable stoneware or earthenware. Each module pairs conceptual knowledge with structured studio exercises so you leave with real objects and the skills to keep making.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Select an appropriate clay body and prepare it correctly through wedging and conditioning

02

Construct forms using pinch, coil, and slab hand-building methods with consistent wall thickness

03

Demonstrate basic centring, opening, and pulling on the potter's wheel

04

Trim, finish, and dry greenware to minimise cracking and warping before bisque firing

05

Apply underglazes and glazes safely and load work into a kiln for bisque and glaze firings

06

Identify common faults in finished work and trace them back to technique errors for correction
